Canouan Island. What a sad story. Raffles runing 2/3 of the island, which has been made into a rich mans paradise. The locals can no longer go to that part of the island, but only go to work as servants and workers in the resort facility.
I sailed from Denmark with my family and anchored here. I befriended a local and we went spearfishing. Well, he kind of needed me and my speargun, because that day he could not borrow his friends speargun. We took turns shooting and he got his days catch.
This fisherman told me how poorly Raffles treated the locals. The wages were very low, and especially it mad me sad/angry that if you were hurt on the job, you would not receive any support from Raffles (the employer) while you recovered.
One heavy duty truck driver was killed in a Raffles truck with faulty brakes. No compensation for his family.
Rich people sucking out the life of less fortunate ones. I fail to se why there is no room for offering a decent employment.
phew…you almost ran out of gas getting to the 11th!!!
Haha…that’s why I called it a “wild ride”..
Well, considering I don’t live there, I probably did more good spending some money and tipping some employees rather than staying away from the course. But, let’s be real…you ever talked to Walmart or restaurant or hotel employee in the US? Minimum wage & no benefits. Construction workers in US: illegal immigrants being abused/underpaid. You ever been to Chinese sweatshop? So, let’s be real,,,,,
By the way, did you know that most adults would have to leave Canouan if it was not for those “Crappy” Raffles jobs? Which is a lesser evil? Like I said above: no need to go to Canouan to see underpaid/overworked people. The US and Europe construction, restaurant, cleaning services, etc industries would not survived without illegal immigrants being paid LESS than minimum wage, and being threaten with deportation if they complain. And, a sweatshop employee in China???? Objectivity, please.
