  1. Its funny I was just talking about it the other day how everybody says to
start the downswing with the lower body, but when I watch slow motion
videos most people start with the arms.

  2. Funny how those who are considered to be the best ball strikers the game
has ever known and Hall of Famers ALL started their downswings with the
lower body and they are Hogan, Trevino, Nicklaus, Plamer, Player. Take a
look at the best of todays young stars and they all start the downswing
    with their lower body.

  3. Just seen yr videos for the first time-you’re a great teacher Mike. Love
the analogies and clarity of your teaching.

  4. Just remember caddismaster snead hit the ball further then hogan and he
said to start the downswing with the arms.

  5. @larryrsf I find it quite odd that you are suggesting that Mike Bender
should read a Leadbetter book to learn the transition when Mr. Bender has
worked with Leadbetter, He is not selling snake oil. Your view of the golf
swing is just myopic. Give what he says a try with an open mind, and you
will see that it works. Zach Johnson won the masters with this snake oil!!!!

  6. I must add that just before his club reached the top of the swing Hogan
started his downswing with his front hip and he also had a forward lateral
weight shift to his front foot at the same time he was turning his hip.
This action created tremendous force and speed with the clubhead as the
hands followed the arms which followed the shoulders which followed the
legs which followed the hips. Take a look at baseball hitters, they need
bat speed and they don’t start with the hands to get it.

  7. Manuel, where exactly did you find Snead making that statement? I’ve looked
every where and cannot find it.

  8. Rory McIlroy sure looks like he’s starting with his hips in “the best swing
in golf today” video. Check the slow-mo, pause at the top….

  9. The lower body shift and rotation is key to getting maximum acceleration
from the arms and hands releasing at the bottom of the swing. How far do
you think a baseball player can throw the ball without using his lower
body, how far would a person be able to throw a javelin only using their
arms. Think about it, power comes from the ground up, always has always
will. Snead said you need to use your hands but in the release of the club
    head not at the top.

  10. Is this old school MORAD? I like this instruction much more than the new
MORAD stuff I have seen on the net.

  11. I think Ben Hogan said it best in his Five Lessons book. Read pages 92, 106
thru 108, 114, 123 which supports the turning of the hips to initiate the
downswing followed by the shoulders, arms and hands. He notes on page 123
that in the chain action of the downswing the hips are the pivotal element.
On page 92 he states the surest way to wreck the downswing is to start with
the hands and not the hips. History shows that Ben proved himself to be a
pretty decent player and ball striker. Try it.

  12. The best ball strikers in the world start with their pelvis, followed by
the trunk, then arms then clubhead – THATS A FACT. The K-vest proves it
with their research. Feel is not real. I don’t care if Bender thinks or
feels arms first, Zach Johnson starts with his lower body… look it up!

  13. @kyernst couldn’t have said it better myself…anyone who thinks the
sequence starts with the arms and hands is on crack..

  14. @denwhit NO, he first said that traditional instruction has taught that the
body starts the swing. Then he goes on to say there is a big difference
between what happens and “feel”. The problem with the tip is this, THE ARMS
DO NOT MOVE FIRST! I don’t care how you feel, you cannot say that the body
does not start first in Tour player and better player swings. Because there
is research to prove otherwise, substantial research. Is there merit in
feel tips yes, is this info correct – NO!

  15. Great video, thanks so much for putting these on. I can trust it now after
your explanation of how the arms travel further than the shoulders and
hips. I think this was what I was doing wrong because I would get stuck and
flip it over causing a hook.

  16. this is a feel not necessarily real, a lot of players struggle to get the
right elbow in front of the right hip coming down, therefore thinking of
the hands and or clubhead only can speed up the right arm coming down and
    get it synced up better.

  17. You guys arent thinking very much….watch hunter mahans ‘key moves video’
and you will see bender knows his shit. And BTW Tiger and rory both said
they would want only hunters swing if they could change!!! dip shits…and
bender says in the act of resisisting the hips move open 30 at impact….

  18. I totally understand what he is saying. Its a feeling that he talks about.
Everyone knows turn starts with the hips. He is emphasizing the feeling of
the hands/arms need to catch up since it has the most distance to travel
(160 degrees) compared to the distance with the hips (70 degrees) and
shoulders (90 degrees). When you connect the timing correctly, there a lot
of lag and compression on the ball.

  19. You guys are thinking very much….watch hunter mahans ‘key moves video’
and you will see bender knows his shit. And BTW Tiger and rory both said
they would want only hunters swing if they could change!!! dip shits…and
bender says in the act of resisisting the hips move open 30 at impact….

  20. as a former boxer i can tell you the statement about punching is completely
inaccurate. the punch starts from the ground up and it’s the rotation of
your body that gives you power. people who flick their arms out without any
body are normally very soft hitters.you will never see a fighter doing
this, it’s one of the first things you’re taught when you learn to fight

  21. This is 110% correct. Mike is spot on. The arms start the downswing (with
wrists cocked), and the body reacts to this motion…see “swing the
clubhead”. Again, The Body ONLY reacts to this swinging motion… Watch
Jason Dufner Slow Mo. This swing will put you in all the Ben Hogan
positions, instead of Hogan swing mechanics during swing.

  22. Hay mark love all your videos bro lots of good tips.. I have a Q for u I
hit my iron really well but i have lots of distance and b/c of that really
hard to control my short game . For an example I hit my 50° wedge about 170
yards and my 7 iron about 215 how can I control my. Distance when I’m about
50 to 40 yards out? Hope to here from you soon thanks a lot

  23. This works really well on a links style course where there may be a lot of
wind. It’s hard to judge though if you aren’t used to playing in those
conditions. I played links style course where it was incredibly windy,
especially since half of the course lines the ocean. I clubbed up as much
as 2 or 3 clubs and just swung like I normally would, at full speed, to get
the right distances. Sometimes, it worked how I wanted it to. And other
times it was short or just long of the green.

  24. Great vid Mark.me n my bro always try these types of shots at the driving
range in the winter. Its amazing when confronted with a shot that is
required how quickly you remember. Under the trees mostly for me 🙁

  25. There is a shot like this i practice. On my home course, if you miss left
on #7, “putting/pitching” a 3 wood under the trees is usually a better
option than trying to go over them

  26. Never thought about doing this, I usually just try to smash the ball as
straight as possible. Need to rethink my strategy

  27. In my club champs the other day i had to make a shot in 22mph winds. i used
a similar technique and it worked like a charm. I am now going to work this
into my practice sessions more often as i play on a windy course! Top stuff
    Mark!

  28. Best video you have done to date Mark, great stuff. Just bought your App,
hopefully post a Swing for you to critique soon.

  29. great idea but be sure the markers are correct. The ones at my course which
is a very nice course are off by sometimes as much as 10 yds. I use my Golf
Buddy GPS and it’s always right on the money.

  30. You can’t always see your distances on the range. The best way to get your
distances is to note them down on the course from real experience. Measure
your distance to the flag and when you hit what you think is a good shot,
see what the actual result is and note it. I.e. I measure 135m to the pin,
I hit a good solid 8i and find that I’ve undershot by 6 then adjust my
    distance accordingly.

  31. im 12 years old so i cant hit it as far as u can so its really helpful info
    thanx mark ur a legend

  32. Hi Mark which one of the Nikon rangefinders is this? And is this the same
one you use in the Spanish etc videos?

  33. How do you actually find out what distance you’ve hit on a driving range
    using the range-finder?

  34. Hi Mark.
Love the vid’s. Any ideas about how to really properly practice approach
shots. Wedges especially. Playing off 11, but need to get my 120 yards and
closer shots better, but don’t really know how to make the most of my
practice time. Any drills you could highlight would help. Practicing with a
    purpose is important so HELP!
    Matt
